There is light at the end of the tunnel for young Luke Bennett. Centre half Luke has been out of action for a year and a half after two serious knee injuries, but has stayed positive and worked incredibly hard, and is now on the verge of playing again. Yellow World asked Luke how the original injury happened:

"It was in a reserve game on a Monday night against Ipswich. About three minutes into the match their winger went across the ball and I was turning to tackle him. As I twisted, all my weight went through my knee and it just popped out straight away. It was absolute agony and I knew I'd done something quite serious straight away. I was straight off to the hospital, having gas and air on the way. It was the last year of my scholarship and as soon as I was told I needed an operation and I'd be out for six months I was gutted. I knew that was the season over. It wasn't an easy time at all. Horrible"

Having worked his way back Luke then suffered a similar injury in his comeback game, a pre-season game against Bristol Rovers at Bisham Abbey:

"I'd felt good in pre-season and was enjoying my football again. That's all I really wanted, to get back and have a smile on my face again. Then I went to nick a ball in a tackle and immediately the same sensation was there again. It wasn't as painful, because they put in an artificial ligament, but the scan came up and it showed the same injury on the same knee and my heart sank.

"The surgeon said it wasn't a lack of work or preparation, it was just sheer bad luck that it had gone again. You can't help things like that sometimes. It's been a long haul back but I've been feeling good and I was hoping to be involved in training last week but there's just a bit of tendonitis. That's only a small setback but something you maybe expect along the way. I'll just keep battling. The surgeon has said there shouldn't be any long term problems and I can't wait to get back again."

Every smiling, Luke is quick to pass credit on to those who have helped him pull through:

"I can't praise Charlie Greig and Neil Sullivan enough. Whenever I have a problem they are both there straight away and are top drawer. The players have been brilliant as well. Chris Willmott talks me through and Billy Turley has been excellent, always keeping my spirits up and helping me get through what has been a tough eighteen months. It's worse when you're out there running round the training pitch because you see football every day and know you can't join in."

So, ultimately, what keeps the nineteen year old defender going?

"Knowing that in the end I will play football again. I am so desperate to get back and it keeps me going. I blinker out everything else and just keep working. I was looking to get a game in before the end of the season but maybe it will be a case of coming back in pre-season and proving myself. The club have been excellent and so supportive, and now all I want is to get a ball at my feet and start playing again."
