There were two winning Trainers on Grand National day as Man of the Match Phil Trainer gave United a win by a head at the Wessex Stadium. Trainer nodded in the only goal of the game to make it three away wins on the spin for Darren Patterson's improving United and leave Weymouth hovering on the trap door out of the Blue Square Premier.

Keeping to their familiar 4-4-2 line up, with James Clarke at right back as expected and Matt Day at centre half in place of the suspended Luke Foster, United created the first opening after seven minutes when Justin Richards got a flick to a Phil Trainer cross and saw the ball flash just wide of the post.

Trainer, wide on the left, was having plenty of freedom and soon after thumped another right footed effort into the speedway stadium that adjoins the Wessex Stadium before the first effort from The Terras as Michael Malcolm's shot from ten yards was well parried by the alert Billy Turley..

It was all very even for the first quarter, with the crowd enjoying the spring sunshine and waiting patiently for the game to spring into life. Turley made another good save from a curling effort from James Coutts on 24 and blocked at the near post from Convery two minutes later and after the even start it was suddenly the home side having the first concerted spell of pressure.

Coutts was through again on 26 and denied by the fast advancing Turley, who was the man keeping his side in the game. The U's forced their first corner on 40 minutes and caused no end of problems as the hesitant Henderson in goal spilled Trainer's ball in and Matt Day's effort was scrambled off the line, and that sparked five minutes of pressure at the Weymouth end as United woke up and applied pressure for the first time.

The home side had had the advantage of a strong wind at their backs in the opening period but had failed to capitalize, and United started the second half much more positively as the wind and the midfield duo of Hand and Murray started to push them forward. Another fine cross from Trainer found Eddie Anaclet inside the box on 51 minutes but the right winger snatched at the chance and blazed over the bar first time when he might have had time to take the ball down and test Henderson

The U's were now the dominant force, and Murray fired wide, Richards had a shot blocked and a double substitution on 79 minutes saw both strikers replaced by Yemi Odubade and Craig McAllister.

Weymouth, fighting to avoid a return to the Blue Square South were left holding their heads in their hands two minutes later as Malcolm, in the middle, wriggled clear and somehow missed the target from eight yards with only Turley to beat.

It proved the crucial moment. Three minutes later and United grabbed the vital goal with a well worked goal. Odubade did well to bring the ball down on the right of the area. McAllister did equally well to retain the ball and feed Anaclet who spotted Trainer unmarked on the far side of the area. Anaclet lofted the ball over the Weymouth defence and Trainer did superbly to rise and cleverly nod the ball high over Henderson and into the corner of the net to delight the superb fans behind the goal. Trainer's sixth of the season: could he end the campaign as top scorer?

Having weathered the weather (and Weatherstone) in the first half United had deserved their goal and their win and another clean sheet from the ever resolute defence was an added bonus. By the end Weymouth were gambling on four men up front but leaving plenty of gaps at the other end and United once again finished the job with increasingly typical professionalism. They even had three glorious chances to finish the job in injury time! Henderson presented the ball to McCAllister who tamely gave it him back, Hand hit the bar from 35 yards with a great effort and Trainer lashed the ball against the post ten seconds later!

A second goal would just have been the flake in the ice cream on a lovely day by the seaside.
