United were far too strong for Farsley Celtic today, scoring five and missing the same number of clear chances as they ended their Saturday home games in style. Yemi Odubade, Phil Trainer, two from Matt Green and an Adam Murray penalty gave the U's a double over relegation haunted Celtic.
For the second game in a row United had the perfect start. Three minutes in and Barry Quinn cleared long and Craig McAllister flicked on. Odubade was on it like an Exocet, bursting between defenders Steve Torpey and Stephen Downes and into open space behind the defence. Sometimes Yemi has wasted chances after that, but this time was calmness personified as he waited for keeper Aspden to commit himself then planted the ball past him and into the net for his ninth goal of the season.
It settled any nerves United might have had after losing their last home game to Northwich and opened up the game nicely, with Farsley having to come forwards to try and get something out of the game as they battle to stay out of the relegation places.
In truth they rarely got out of their own half all afternoon and should have been dead and buried when Phil Trainer smashed a twenty yard free kick against the left hand post with the keeper not even bothering to move.
A fine sweeping move on 26 minutes saw Murray free Anaclet with a thirty yard ball and Odubade test the keeper with a low shot when Anaclet cut the ball back and a minute later came another great opening as Anaclet beat the keeper to the ball on the right wing (yes, we know) and crossed for the unmarked McAllister to nod against the post from a couple of yards out.
It was all a bit one sided and should have been over by half time with Murray pulling the strings with some audacious passes to all areas and McAllister an ever willing target man. However, this is still 2007/8 so you know never to relax and on 32 evil twin David McNiven fired a curling effort only just wide from the edge of the box to remind Turley and his defence not to doze off in the spring sunshine.
Odubade then had another clear opening on 34 as Georges Santos misjudged the flight of the ball and Yemi beat the keeper to the ball twenty five yards out (YES, we know). His lob looked to be heading into the net until it Panesared towards first slip on the final bounce and trickled apologetically wide of the left hand post.
Odubade was having a field day, far too lively for the Farsley defence, and on 40 minutes played another big part as The U's closed the game out. Once again he was clear when Torpey brought him down right on the edge of the area. Up stepped Phil The Power Trainer, and this time, having set the radar earlier in the game, he smashed a low left footer round the wall and through the hapless Aspden to make it 2-0.
It looked to all present, including the 39 away fans, that the game was wrapped up, but ninety seconds into the second half it all went lightly wrong as Farsley grabbed an unlikely lifeline. Barry Quinn was penalized for foot up on the edge of the area and sub Simeon Bambrook casually curled the free kick round the wall and through the hands of Turley to make it 2-1.
There was still life in the game, and United then had the ideal opportunity to open up that two goal lead almost immediately as the pace of Odubade again caused chaos. Veteran Torpey had been subbed at half time to avoid further humiliation, but replacement center half James Knowles fared even worse. Odubade ran past him and cut across inside the area. Knowles brought him down, and ref Cooper pointed to the spot before brandishing the red card to Knowles.
Up stepped Adam Murray but this time he couldn't convert as Aspden plunged to his right to push the penalty away and just about keep the ten men in it.
Undaunted, United kept coming forward and a tremendous drive from the rejuvenated Trainer was heading for the far corner until Aspden flew to save it high to his left. Evil Twin then flashed a shot wide from twenty yards on 70 to wake everyone up a bit but Farsley actually looked more solid defensively with Good Twin Scott alongside Santos, but were visibly tiring and it was no surprise when United finally made it 3-1.
It's always good to see subs have an effect and on 71 minutes Murray opened things up for sub Danny Rose to time his pass to Mickey Howard perfectly and allow the left back to advance a couple of steps and cross low and accurately to the far post where Matt Green slid in to net with ease. Odubade remains top scorer with nine, but Green remains hot on his heels, drawing level with Trainer on seven and then getting one more to close in on Yemi
United won at a canter really and Farsley could hardly argue as United made it 4-1 with eight minutes to go as Odubade tortured Santos once more and skipped past him in the area with inevitable consequences all round. This time Murray made no mistake, thumping the ball home and celebrating wildly.
A good afternoon's work all round capped in the final minute as Green cut in from the right past the overlapping keeper (YES, WE KNOW) and stabbed the ball into the gap between two defenders on the line. Marvellous.
We've started enjoying ourselevs again. And so have the players. Can we restart the season?
