Guinea Game Put Back
United's scheduled pre-season game against the national team of Guinea has been put on hold.
The U's were due to fly out to Guinea for a game in the capital city, Conakry, on July 13th but the game has been postponed due to International clearance problems.
FIFA have told the Guinean authorities that their national team cannot play any further competitive matches before August, and with United's Blue Square Premier League season kicking off on August 9th it now looks unlikely that the game can be played this summer.
Chairman Nick Merry was disappointed by the news:
"It is a blow because it would have been a prestigious match, against a team that did well in the African Cup of Nations. We had provisionally booked the flights and accommodation and were well ahead with our planning in terms of inoculations and the logistics of taking the squad and support staff over for the game
"We hadn't received final confirmation until today, when the Embassy told us that FIFA had been in touch. The national stadium is being renovated this summer and that also meant a few safety concerns. Football is such a huge part of people's lives in Guinea and the game would have been a big thing, but it's out of our hands.
"We will continue to work with the people of Guinea and we will hopefully get out there to play the game at some stage in the future."
Manager Darren Patterson was also disappointed:
"We'd built it in to our pre-season plans and it would have been an honour to test ourselves against a strong team like Guinea in front of a huge crowd. It was a chance for the team to bond ahead of the new season and we were looking forward to it, but now we will make alternative plans with everything geared to being right when the season kicks off in August."
