Carl began his career at Portsmouth before making 30 appearances for Exeter. A move to Roots Hall followed, where Carl was an integral, ever-present part ofSouthend's promotion winning side of 2004/5. Injury restricted him to 12 games as Southend marched straight through to the Championship last season, taking his senior appearances beyond the 100 mark. He joined United in the summer of 2006. Carl has made his name as a hard-working right sided midfielder but was outstanding in the centre of the park for The U's.
