Q and A with Jim Smith
In the new Q and A section of the site we invite fans to send in questions to the men at the top at Oxford United.
First into the hot seat was boss Jim Smith, and in part one of the interview Jim looked back on his playing days.
What was the highlight of your playing career?
"I haven't got too many highlights as a player. Maybe the highlight was playing in an England youth trial at Corby Town. I was right half in the Probables team , and Nobby Stiles and Geoff Hurst were in the Possibles. Normally the selectors would pick the side from those games, but just my luck it got snowed off after 40 minutes! Then I turned professional the next week and was ineligible to play for the youth team after that so never got the chance again. I signed too quickly and should have waited, then played for the England team. Nobby Stiles delayed signing, won a cap, then signed, which was the right thing to do and what I should have done.
"In terms of actual games it was playing for Aldershot in the FA Cup against Aston Villa. In those days whoever beat Villa won the cup. We drew there, and I got nine out of ten in the ratings, and still wasn't our star man: the keeper got ten out of ten! We beat then 3-2 in the replay at the Recreation Ground, which was the highlight of my career I guess."
Did the fact that your playing career didn't really hit the heights drive you on and inspire you to become a successful manager?
"I was a good player but didn't have the pace. Even in those days you had to have the pace. I was a thoughtful player, which I think helped me in management and coaching. Also I knew I wasn't going to be a top top player so I made sure I did my badges, so that at 28 when the chance came to become a player-manager I took it.
"Some of the most memorable games came when I was player-manager because it had that double importance. We got to the third round of the Cup and lost to Portsmouth, and that was another great day.
"If you look at it over all then the top players haven't always become the best managers. Maybe they're too rich and don't need the hassle, I don't know!"
Part Two of this interview is in Yellow World right now, with two more parts to follow soon.
We are now inviting questions for goalkeeper Billy Turley. If you'd like to Ask Elvis then email in your question to admin@oufc.co.uk
